Featuring the latest work of local artist, Rene Perez, inspired by the whimsical creatures of Wonder World Cave and Park. An emu with a flair for the pompadour, a cheeky rooster with a pronounced under bite, a sassy macaw, and quarrelsome deer… These are just a few of the quirky personalities that populate Rene’s newest works. His inspiration? The wondrous animals of Wonder World.
Speaking about the differences between his interactions with wild animals in nature and the animals featured at Wonder World, Rene says, “It takes a long time to establish a relationship with an animal in the wild, but here its easy cuz they’re ready for you. You come up and they’re like, “Here I am!”
The animals’ expressive faces, the focus of these latest portraits, instill in the viewer a sense of the familiar. A turkey that strangely resembles Willie Nelson, or a peacock reminiscent of Snoop Dog, provokes a chuckle. A nod to the known, the remembered, and an introduction to an utterly engaging cast of characters. These are Rene’s new friends, and he’s excited to share them, and the park that they call home, with you.
“Just the magic of this place, I feel like it’s a new world… It’s very serendipitous to be here. It just feels right. I’m finding something that’s uncharted, that I haven’t done before.” Wonder World is the missing piece to the puzzle. Placed into the final image: the San Marcos landscape is complete, populated by the ever enigmatic animals created and celebrated by Rene Perez.
